Why do we Dream?

"Most Highly Sensitive People (HSP) have vivid dreams often; they usually remember them and have an innate ability to interpret them (Aron, 2011). This is likely due to the heightened receptivity of your senses. As an intuitive, empathic person, at every given moment your senses pick up on thousands of unconscious signals from the environment and people around you. If you try to receive and process them all during the day, your system will be overloaded. Your dreams are therefore there to help you organise and make this information useful to you. Although the messages are communicated to you via symbols, your dreams are ultimately trying to help you."  Psychology Today

Why do we forget our Dreams?

According to National Sleep Foundation, an average human being dreams about four-six times every night. This fact is hard to believe or get a hold of but is indeed true. We tend to forget 95% of the dreams that we see the whole night. The dreams that we tend to remember the most are the ones that we’ve seen just before waking up. You can remember two dreams at most, or sometimes even three, based on how fast your brain was functioning or your Rapid Eye Movement sleep.  Dreams may be stored in our memory, waiting to be recalled. This may explain why you suddenly remember a dream later in the day: Something may have happened to trigger the memory.

How to remember Dreams

Before Sleep:
  • Almonds and cherries help make dreams more vivid
  • Consistently go to bed at same time every night
  • Remind yourself to remember your dreams
  • Keep bedroom temperature below 75 degrees
  • Avoid alcohol or drugs
  • Drink 3 glasses of water
  • Calm your mind and body
  • Think deeply about the situation without judgement
  • Try listening to some music
Upon waking:
  • Wake frequently throughout the night
  • Wake slowly and naturally without an alarm
  • Playback your dream in as much detail as possible
  • Journal without judgement before feet hit the floor
  • Keep a notepad with you throughout the day
  • Go back to your bed and lie down
  • Notice patterns and symbols

Symbols

Every dream is a message from some deeper unconscious part of myself to the more conscious everyday part of myself expressed in a language that needs to be learned and understood. The dream has been called the royal road to the unconscious. A modern way of saying that would be that the dream is the window to the soul.  Anything that can be 'dreamed' of can carry a deeper psychological and emotional significance for us than what may be first apparent on the surface.

Types of Symbols

  • Conventional symbols are those we all use every day
